Snow & Ice

It snowed! And snowed and snowed. It was much deeper a couple days after this pic.The girls played for hours and hours in the snow. It was glorious! By the time I had a day off work (even though only half the patients were showing up) the snow had turned to ice. An ice storm came through and weighed the trees (and power lines) down. Totally ruined my turn to play in the snow. Ice skating anyone? ;)Zoey was not amused. Missy however, ran around like a dog on crack.Our power was out for two days but thanks to Alex (and Jeff), we had warmth and light with the diesel generator they wired to our panel a few years ago. We enjoyed the excuse to hang out with friends and felt grateful for a relatively mild reminder of the importance of being prepared. The damage to the trees everywhere was extensive. Huge branches cracked off, trees split in half, some were even uprooted. There's a lot of clean-up and still more winter ahead...

Jamie's Award

Jamie received an award for perseverance! Pretty sure it had something to do with pneumonia and overcoming the fallout of 11 days absent. I know it was hard and I hated it too, but I am so proud of you Jamie!! And aren't we blessed to have a teacher who is so understanding and encouraging? Thank you Mrs. Bailey!

Alex and Jamie chose an ice cream cake to share for their birthday celebration which was belated because Laura ruins everything. Right. Jamie got an iPod Touch for her birthday!

Alex didn't want to do anything for his birthday-wish granted. Jamie thought it was tragic to have school on her birthday and I had to work. Alex took her balloons and donuts to share with her class; that was nice, at least. Maybe we'll have that party she's been planning. Depends on that 11-year-old attitude...

Discovery Bay

Friday afternoon we took a little drive to the Olympic peninsula for a weekend getaway with the Kaasa family. We were delighted with the dollhouse-like layout of our room (four stories including a master suite with jetted tub and a loft with two twin beds for the girls). Our unit was right on the water and we enjoyed a beautiful sunrise.We did our gingerbread house when we arrived Friday night. The girls LOVED the pool here and didn't want to do anything but swim the whole weekend.Our dads are the same age. Really?! ;)The dock at Discovery Bay. Let's bring the boat here. Fun!A nice weekend away, especially after so many weeks of coughs, colds, fever and Jamie & Alex's hit with pneumonia.

Apples

When I learned my friend Krista had access to Fuji apples fresh off the tree for 30 cents/lb, I thought it would be fun to take a day trip to Yakima and visit the orchard. And Krista, of course! I've always wanted to pick apples in an orchard (though it's not as picturesque in the cold) and how great for the girls to get apples from mother nature instead of Costco. Right? Anyway, here's the girls in the orchard. Best apples I've ever tasted. Really. Straight from heaven.The girls peeking through a trunk FULL of apples!These will keep through the winter, stored in coolers, if you're wondering why so many. Plus some were for my mom. :)

So we had a crazy fun visit at Krista's and headed home around 8. We stopped in Selah for fuel and then the car wouldn't start. I freaked out a little, called Alex and long mechanical story short, the check engine light came on and the computer went into "limp mode." Even though we got the car to start, it wouldn't shift into overdrive. After consulting with Alex, we "limped" to Ellensburg at 45mph with our flashers going and decided to call it a night there-concerned about having problems over the pass. The girls loved the adventure and forced sleepover in a hotel. Me? Not so much. Now my apples were costing WAY more the 30cents/lb.

Alex came to rescue us the next morning. I fell in love with him all over again. We made a pit stop at the pass and the girls got their first snow play!Summing it all up? Fresh picked apples are delicious and adventures are expensive.

Trick-or-Treat!

We had some friends and neighbors over for pizza and trick-or-treating. We played pin the eye on the ghost (great job Lindsey), we took pictures in our costumes and we danced to the Monster Mash. I think it was my favorite Halloween night so far. Aren't they adorable?!Happy chaos! When the older girls were done trick-or-treating they passed out candy and danced with the skeleton. Put a little Thriller on outside and the party doesn't stop!One of our neighbors passes out hot chocolate. Perfect! 97% of parents take candy from their children. The other 3% are lying. Except the peanut M&Ms. They gave me these. :)The dogs were pretty excited about all the chocolate dumped out in the living room. Missy is super sneaky and hauled a piece off to my room so she wouldn't be discovered.I got Missy this costume (said BAD DOG) and it was on top of her crate, apparently hanging over the edge. Lindsey received an award for "Respect for Learning." Lindsey and her friend Kylee were also selected to read the biographies they wrote about each other during the assembly. Lindsey really does take learning very seriously. I enjoy watching her while I volunteer in her classroom each week and delight in the imaginary class she reads to and teaches at home. Way to go Lindsey! And Kylee! I had patients and couldn't be at the assembly but Daddy was there! I love this picture of them. And thank you to Grandma & Poppy-daddy who also came to support Lindsey!

Leavenworth

October 15 was the Leavenworth half marathon. My sister decided she didn't have time to train (full-time job and a newborn) so I took her slot and enjoyed a beautiful run. Well, jog. I love Leavenworth this time of year and it was fun to get away with Kelley & family. Plus it was definitely my strongest run, though I have no idea what my time was. Patrick. I think you're amazing. And I love this memory with you. T-shirt anaconda squeeze! After the race, Kelley and the girls met us in Leavenworth (they stayed to swim at the hotel pool in Wenatchee) and we enjoyed walking through the Bavarian town. We did not do the hat shop (there was a 10min line) but we enjoyed the toy shop, cured meats & cheese on a baguette from Cure, divine sampling at A Matter of Taste, a street clown, name shop and some fudge. Oh yes. I ate back every calorie I burned.The owners were so delighted with the girls I couldn't resist doing their names. Fun!On the way home we stopped for a box of Yakima tomatoes (why does produce from eastern Washington bring me such joy?) and later that week I canned 19 pints of SALSA!

I hate the Fair but I love my kids, and they really wanted to go, so...

We peeked in on the pigs; reminds me of a scene from Wallace & Gromit's Creature Comforts. But that was enough of the animals at the Fair. We had bigger plans. Like arguing about how many ride tickets they could have. Grrr.

Lindsey rode the new ride, Vertigo. She is my adventure girl. Among other rides, they rode the Spider. Super excited about it...until it got going. I was the horrible mom laughing from the sidelines. This one begs a zoom in...They didn't like it Whac-a-mole

Not as originally planned, but we took a weekend together to celebrate. Saturday, Kelley took the girls (bless her soul-I was about to LOSE IT) and Alex & I worked together around the house and yard. We also went tile shopping STRESS and after some exasperating, back and forth weighing of options, we made a decision for our bathroom-which currently has no shower or toilet and hardie board for a floor. I HATE home improvement projects. We went to dinner at The Ram and fell asleep like dead people on the couch. The girls had a very fun day at the zoo with Kelley! Thanks for the great pics! Love this of Jamie helping Lindsey on the monkey barsThe girls stayed the night with Kelley and Sunday morning Alex and I went to Mt Rainier to see the Carbon Glacier. It was a perfect day for me, for us. Much needed time away from our cares and a reminder of how amazing we are together.

Drive across the Carbon River Bridge, stop to test your fear of heights and/or will to survive.In 2006 the river flooded and washed out the road to Ipsut campground-where the hike to Carbon Glacier begins. Now you must walk/bike the five miles from the entrance to Ipsut. We opted to bike (thank goodness) and stopped at this massive uprooted tree. Really puts into perspective the force of the water that went through this place. I was in heaven.After five miles of more uphill than we anticipated, we were ready to ditch the bikes.Cool facts. But don't stand here too long. You'll get eaten alive by mosquitos! and P.S. There is a detour along the trail that we're pretty sure makes it longer than 3.5 miles to the glacier. Wonderland is a fitting name though. Start hiking!Taking a breather at Ipsut Falls. Pictures can't capture the beauty. Do they capture the love? ;)Getting closer. We stopped here for lunch. We crossed the suspension bridge just for fun. The glacier is another .4 miles the other way.View from the bridgeStunning landscapeand just a sampling of the wild flowers that delighted me along the way. And here it is!If you're like me, you're disappointed not to see an ice blue glacier. Apparently you have to go to Alaska for that. But under all that dirt is a mass of ice that starts the Carbon River!

Ocean Shores

Our (last) annual trip to Ocean Shores-Dad starting up the fire for our cookout on the beach!It's cold but we're still smiling. Mostly.Playing in the sandCoolest uncle ever!Go fly a kite-Alex's way of tuning everyone out while he listened to the Dave Ramsey show...After our cookout the kids swam at the hotel pool-always a favorite! The next day we played at the jetty where the sun tried to shine, at least.Digging holes. Let me tell you the story.
Once upon a time there was a place where the sun rarely shined. We went shooting at the Tacoma Sportsmen's ClubI shot my Dad's 357 Smith & Wesson-my first with a revolver (DANG!) and stuck with his .22 for target practice. The guys on either side of us offered me to try their guns too-a Sig 239 40 cal and uh, one the military uses...can't remember the name, but the bullets will pierce body armor at close range. Man! After shooting at least eight magazines with the AR 15 I tried the 30-30. LOVED it!We went to the Ram for dinner (If you're ever there for a burger, it's worth the upgrade to Prime beef. Wow! Best burger I've ever had!) DQ for dessert and back to my parent's to watch a movie. I had SO much fun. Thanks Dad!!

Warrior Dash

I roped Alex into doing this event with me. I LOVED it! 3.5 miles + 11 obstacles. Crazy fun!

American Girl

American Girl opened a Seattle store and of course the girls wanted to go to the grand opening! We went with our cousins, Brecken & Molly and Aunt Kirsti. Daddy even came!Kanani is the Girl of the Year. She's from Hawaii. Can we have her, please?So hard to decide when you can only choose two things but we finally checked outand walked down the mall for lunch at the Nordstroms Bistro. I love how Molly and Lindsey were swinging the doll between them. A fun (only slightly overwhelming) grand opening and a happy memory with cousins!American Girl celebrates a girl's inner star-that little whisper inside that encourages her to stand tall, reach high and dream big.Man this company knows how to market to a girl and her parents! :)

Pt Defiance Explore the Shore

July 14-we went to Owen Beach for one of the lowest tides of the year and with guides from the zoo, explored the tide pools. Amazing! Even if Jamie was mostly annoyed with my idea of a quality morning.They had the kids write down and classify every (living) thing they saw Water jellyAnother jelly, or portal to some sci-fi dimension...Mr CrabsMarine algaes-kelp & sea lettuceSea starsAnother crabWe tried to get him to pinch with his claw. He was not amused.Large barnacles that reminded me of baby birds in a nestUnder the dock we got "spit" on by clams shooting water from beneath the sand. Mckenna got one right up the pant leg. She was as unamused as that crab...

Trolls, Toxic Sediment, Pirates & Frogs

July 9-we took a girls trip to Seattle. We went in search of the Fremont Troll and found him (under the Aurora bridge)! I think he's perfectly exciting! And massively cool! Look how small the girls are on his hand!Taking in his face and that hub cap eye!Love that he also has a VW ;)Discovering "This is a real car!"On top of the bridge where the troll lives
After visiting the troll we went to Gas Works ParkThough if I'd done my research, I would have known that this would be a severe disappointment to the girls. There's no swimming or even wading allowed due to a toxic sediment in Lake Union. Yikes. The view was beautiful, at least. The girls climbed around on the old oil machinery and then we headed to Alki, in search of "cleaner" water. We didn't realize this was the day for the Seafair Pirates at Alki. Bonus!! The water was really cold!
But we had fun playing in the sand. And watching the UW Pole Vault team.

We went to Rainforest Cafe for dinner!

Yes. I'm a dork.Fabulous drinks!And Jamie was being quite the character!Loved the Rainforest Cafe experience! Even if the tilapia was yuck.

July 7-took the kids for hike! It was awesome.Beautiful, diverse trailsFinding inner peace (this was our quest, after seeing Kung Fu 2 together) I loved this Ben!Ben spotted this piece of tree "art." We thought it was really cool, even though you shouldn't carve in trees.I was the only one who thought the flowers were cool We did a lot of exploring along the way, through creek bedsin cavesclimbing massive rocks, balancing along fallen logs and finding little creatures. It's always great having Ben along for that.Jamie actually spotted the salamander and Ben caught it so we could all seeWe tempted fate at the edge of this cliffNah. Just kidding. There's another level just beneath, where Ben found a snake all coiled up!Jamison decided to try holding it. Not so bad, right Jamison? :)Lindsey found a shotgun, of sortsRole play ensued; great little actors, don't you think? ;)We had an amazing view of the Snoqualmie Valley when we reached the topJamison too, found inner peace Ah, heaven... Neighborhood party, grill and fireworks! It's bigger and better every year!! And I was so busy "hosting" the day (distracted by an extended family picture we won't talk about) that I didn't get the pictures I wanted. Oh well. Everyone's annoyed when I take pictures anyway. I did get one of the amazing grill master-with his new grill, in the sun, wearing his "stud" shirt. I love him.

We had nice weather complete with water balloons, water guns and pool time! Great food, the best neighbors EVER and a show worth paying for. Oh wait. We did. ;) Thanks Alex & Kent! And Jeff, who kept the order of the fireworks straight. Yes, they were numbered.

We went to get berries with Grandma, Grandpa and all the cousinsThen we took our berries to make feezer jam with (the other) Grandma. These raspberries are heavenly!I love my mom. So much. Alex's New Bike

Alex was waiting for Jeff to arrive for their motorcycle ride and unbeknownst to Alex, Jeff had more than arrived. While Alex was inside, Jeff was outside moving Alex's motorcycle down the street, replacing it with Lindsey's bike and strategically replacing his keys (look close), helmet and coat. He acted confused about Alex's new ride.I mean, really. How was he ever going to keep up with Jeff on that thing? We laughed and laughed.Alex getting his actual bike... so funny!

First let me just say that these girls (Meghan and her sister Marissa) have become like daughters to me. I've never had neighbors that felt like family. The Almonds though, are it. We went to Lakewood Art & Clay Studio, where we each got to paint a ceramic, eat pizza and enjoy celebrating Meghan. Best party ever! Love you Megs!!Kent & Trish had us over for dinner that night too-treating us to Kent's amazing ribs. After dinner we played an awesome game of kickball and roasted marshmallows for smores. This day was an incredible lift to my soul. Thanks guys!

What was supposed to be my little piece of paradise became a tragic disappointment over the last few years. We lost three trees and at least a dozen plants/shrubs to the clay ground they were planted in. After much effort amending the soil, replanting, placing a drain and agonizing about future plants, we decided to extend the water feature and "plant" water instead. Remember when I said the pond was being severely renovated? Oh my goodness. What a process.

I did the Sound to Narrows 12K with Megan from work. "Team Madsen" was shy a few members but we had a great run! We got started about 5 minutes after the official start time so our timing chips didn't register but I know I did it faster than last year. I finally talked Alex into letting me go to Atlanta. He agreed but only to shut me up about it. Works for me! I had a wonderful visit!!

Remembering those who gave their lives...I took the girls to visit a local soldier's cemetery. We had a brief civil war lesson, discussion of world wars and tried to imagine what it would be like to be a prisoner of war or receive a telegram notifying you of the loss of your loved one. The conversations were just as I'd hoped-the girls marveling at the dates on the headstones and taking notice of those awarded Medals of Honor and even Purple Hearts. This was a much needed pause in our holiday to reflect, pay respect and feel gratitude for the sacrifices made by so many.

About the Celexa. It's working! I'm still wacked; it's just less severe. When I volunteer at the school, I can breathe normally and actually feel happy serving there. I have more of an appetite and feel better physically. I'm calmer in my role as wife and mom. Mostly. I don't hate church. Uh... actually I do. But I'm hoping eventually less anxiety will incline me more toward that setting. Speaking of... I helped clean at the church a few weeks ago and now find myself extremely annoyed that people are so inconsiderate. You CAN open the doors without touching the glass. And I'm not talking about little kids. These prints are higher and bigger. Wash your grimey hands. People. And after you do? Wipe down the soap & water splatter around the sink and counters. Time for me to give that talk on church etiquette...

I attended baby Capri's funeral. She was born prematurely and lived just one day. My heart aches for Chris & Summer. I cannot imagine their loss. Capri. Your grandpa spoke at your funeral. He asked us to think about what your brief life taught us. I learned to appreciate the time I have with my babies. Even though they're not babies anymore... I learned to have greater reverence for life and for the Almighty God who sustains it. Chris & Summer. Your fortitude is an inspiration to me and we continue to pray for you and your sweet family. I really can't find the words to describe the emotions of this day, as we laid one baby to rest and welcomed another to life. Meet Bonnie & Spencer's new baby.

Friday after school we headed to beautiful Leavenworth to enjoy some time together before my half marathon in Wenatchee the next day. I wish we had a few more days here. This is a catch & release pond at the resort and there are endless opportunities for exploring down the road at Icicle Creek.We loved the resort (minus hard beds) and a surprisingly warm pool!The pool is always the measure of a resort's worth. To the girls, at least. The next morning I drove to Wenatchee, leaving my family to enjoy the pool rather than wait for me at the finish line. I wanted to have someone there for me but decided it didn't really matter. This race was bittersweet and I was kind of emotional. It was better for me to be alone. A nice guy agreed to take my picture at the finish. :)I went back to document this mile marker. I was really glad to see it. I don't know that I'll ever be able to do twice this distance...
That was my goal-to do the full marathon. But my body wasn't holding up to the training schedule and I was having chronic knee pain. I went to the chiropractor (to address multiple issues) and received discouraging news. My x-rays were horrifying. Kyphosis (reverse curvature) in my neck, sidewinded upper back and what he called "golfer's pelvis." He also saw signs of early stage osteoarthritis. I felt so old. Treatable, managable but so discouraging. He said I wouldn't last another 10 years in my profession (untreated) and I really shouldn't be running long distances. *sigh* I went on Osteobiflex, switched to an uncomfortable pillow and sleeping position and began a program of weekly adjustments. I also agreed to just walk the half. When I got to the starting line though I couldn't resist jogging it. I decided to jog until my knee hurt (bad, I know) and ended up jogging almost the entire distance. My knee never hurt. Until the next day... I felt so good after the race though. It was emotional because while I still accomplished the half, it wasn't without months of stress-to get in the training hours, to address my body issues and to overcome the defeat I felt through it all. Alex and the girls weren't very supportive of the time it takes to train and I often felt very alone. Whatever. I still have a marathon on my bucket list. Honolulu 2012 is my new goal. Oh yeah.

I headed back to Leavenworth and we enjoyed spending some time in the cute Bavarian town. Everyone took a turn here before leaving the resort.Bobby Jack in lederhosen! Awesome.We had fun in the hat shopand the toy shop
and the candy shop, with more hatsand new lunchboxesAfter stopping for some pretzels from 'der Backer,' we headed to Seattle to make it in time for Motorcross at Qwest Field. Exciting but cold!! We only lasted an hour.

A couple weeks ago there was a mix-up in Lindsey's folder and she had another child's work. No big deal really, until I looked at the picture and read the words beneath. And then I just wept. The picture is of the child by himself on the playground with children playing together on the other side of the drawing. They are smiling. He is not. Then he writes, "Recess is not fun. Recess is not fun because nobody ever plays with me. Recess is not fun because they don’t like me. Recess will never be fun." It was just so sad to me. So I used it as a teaching moment for my children (you can too) to take notice of those who feel left out, to include others even if they're not our first choice and to be kind. Because it really matters.

"Birthdays are overrated," I said as I rolled out of bed around 6:15, already kicking myself for missing 5:30 circuit. Whatever. I'm so sick of that voice in my head that constantly tells me I'm failing. Shut it already. At least I had the day off work, so I started with a 7:15 appointment for chiropractic x-rays and exam. My body isn't holding up to my work and the more recent demand for endurance exercise. I love how my commitment to exercise has become another source of stress instead of a way to de-stress. My knee pain is worse and is severely limiting my (ridiculous) marathon goal. So the hope is that this new chiropractor fixes me, teaches me the proper "deep ligamentous" stretching I need and puts me in an athletic orthotic-so I can do a marathon. And then die. Oh, and until that day, I'd also like to increase my sense of well-being. I'm going for that too. For the love of anything sane Laura, get to the point. Right. My birthday. I was going to go to lunch with my grandma but she needed a raincheck from a sleepless night before. Grandma. You're not making me want to grow old! 34. Seems so young comparatively. But I still feel dismal about my age. I thought I would have accomplished so much more, become something more amazing. Yeah, there's that voice again...
So I took notice of the blue skies and sunshine Heavenly Father must have sent just for my birthday :) visited with Bonnie, did some chores, ran some errands and treated myself to a frosty. Which gave me a brainfreeze because I gulped it down on the way to my next appointment. The doctor. This was a follow-up from my physical last month, where we proved with labwork that I am healthy and fine and that the symptoms I experience would require a separate "mood" appointment. Mood. Yeah, I'm in a bad one. A LOT. I hate being on medication, but the truth is, I'm not okay. And I don't just have a bad day here and there. I'm always off. Always agitated, anxious, in a mood. If I'm not? I'm probably just wonderfully distracted. I crave those times. I tell the doctor the truth. It's not just the gray skies. It's being alive. It's being so depleted by an irrational fear and obsessive thoughts and behaviors. It's functioning but only by a thread. It's hating the things I should love most. And worst of all, it's fearing that very dark place that I never want to return to. Ever. We decided on Celexa-which I promised to give a fair chance. GI upset or not. She also gave me Xanax and it became my favorite birthday present, next to the sunshine-which by this point was blocked by cloud cover and rain. Oh well. I picked the girls up and we went to the grocery store. Usually I dread this but they were both quite pleasant. We hurried home, shoved the cold food in the fridge/freezer and headed to the Y for gymnastics and some semblance of exercise for me. Thank goodness for Ke$ha and Katy Perry. Blow and E.T. are my latest butt kicking songs. (Hey Paul. I'm still laughing about Ke-$-HA. I need a new piece of Glee humor, apparently.) My birthday dinner consisted of dried mangos, fresh raspberries, asparagus, celery sticks and honey mustard pretzels. Yeah, 'Cause that's how I roll. Kelley, Patrick & Mckenna came over with a lovely gift and visited for a while. I put the girls to bed and passed out on the couch trying to wait up for Alex. We wouldn't be going to dinner the next night, like we planned and we wouldn't be escaping somewhere for the weekend, like we wanted but I was so touched by all the birthday wishes I received. From my parents before they left for spring break, from visiting teachers, from Facebook and text messages and later from my mailbox. (Jodi. I'm still off FB but the wall posts come to my email. Heh... And you would be proud-despite peanut M&Ms and Truffles being among my birthday gifts, I still have not eaten any candy!) I am very blessed and while it may be true-birthdays are overrated, it's a great reason to schedule a hot stone massage (thank you Alex) and make angel food cake with strawberries and whip cream (thank you self). It's also a great reminder of all the people who love you. I'm 34 and mostly okay.

Brien's Visit

The Briens flew in for Carly's wedding and spent the week in Longview with Spencer's family. On Wednesday they came to Puyallup to spend the day with us! Kelley took the day off, I was able to get off work early and the kids had their normal half-day Wednesday so we got to spend several hours together. Grandma Gayle came for a brief visit and Forrest joined us for dinner! Here's a few cute pics of Audrey and Ian. Who, I may or may not obsess over... Painting pictures for GrandmaI just melt.Audrey. That Soup Recipe

This is the soup Summer made during my last visit. Alex, who is not a fan of soup, loved it. I was quite pleased. This is definitely not low cal, and the second time I made it I tried to cut a few out. I did half the bacon and replaced 1 of the 2 C half & half with 1% milk. It was a no. Alex not only noticed but disapproved. ;)

1 lb sliced bacon
3 C diced celery
1/2 C diced onion
4 C peeled, diced potatoes
3 C chicken broth
2 C diced carrots
3 C cooked chicken
2 cans (10 3/4oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup (undiluted)
2 C half & half cream
1/2 tsp each of salt & pepper

1) Cook bacon, set aside reserving 2 tbsp drippings to 2) saute celery & onions 3) add potatoes, chicken broth & carrots-bring to a boil 4) reduce heat, cover, simmer 20min 5) stir in remaining ingredients and heat through

New Years & Birthdays!!

The girls celebrated at Grandma & Grandpa's New Year's sleepover while Alex and I headed to Snoqualmie for his birthday surprise.A moonlight snowmobiling tour, for which no picture could do any justice. It was a clear night and the stars were absolutely breathtaking. I rode on the back with Alex, since I've never been on a snowmobile. I think it was more effort staying on the back of his than it would have been riding my own! I very nearly flew off, more than once. We rode for about an hour and a half, stopping to gaze at the stars and contemplate our death if we did not have a guide. He took us past a lake that looked like nothing more than a field of snow and up trails with 40+ft drop offs. It was very cold and I'm not sure the tour company quite had their act together, but it was fun. The best part? Alex was truly surprised. We drove home with plans for the hot tub and a night with no kids. Too bad we passed out on the couch only to be awakened by the neighbor's fireworks going awry and exploding outside our kitchen window. Sigh... Happy birthday Alex!
He spent the day fixing our Suburban (reality bites). Kelley & Mckenna joined us for dinner and a little birthday celebration.Banana cream pie topped with 34 candles!The next evening we celebrated Jamie's birthday!These two are great friends. I love it. Christmas Eve day we went to The Summit Tubing Center at Snoqualmie for some fun in the snow. I've wanted to do this for a couple years and even though Alex thought it was a waste of time and money, we all had fun. I loved it, actually. Alex is just used to skiing and snowboarding. I can see how tubing isn't quite the same thrill. ;) Loved being with my brothers and sister too! And be forewarned. I got a little snap happy with the camera...

Early Snow

Jamie and Missy getting a preview of the snow that began Sunday night (Nov 21). School was delayed 2hrs on Monday but the snow was pretty mild. By late afternoon though it was coming down hard. I finally left work around 6:00 after removing a thick layer of snow from the car windows (with my coat sleeve!) and waiting for the windshield to defrost. Brrr. I was NOT prepared for this! I made it about a mile and got stuck behind someone who was stuck. As I tried to get out, my tires hit an ice strip and I just kept sliding backwards. Thank goodness no one was behind me. I called Alex to come save me, fearing that if I let go of the e-brake I would continue to slide into the person that was now stuck behind me. What a mess. Meanwhile the girls were still with the babysitter... While waiting for Alex, a nice guy pushed my car out and I was able to get to our house. Alex met me there and we went to get the girls together. We finally got home around 7:30 to a power outage. Alex started up the generator for us and we snuggled up by the fire while he headed back to work. I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for him. And for our home.

Jamie joined an after school running group a couple weeks ago. They meet at the track every Wednesday and she has been learning some great fitness tips. A few girls from the group ran their first race-the Snoqualmie Ridge Turkey Trot 1K.Lindsey and a few others joined them :) I ran the 5K and experienced for the first time the support of having your family there at the finish line. It's kinda better than finishing alone. Thanks Alex.We stopped to see the waterfall.It's absolutely breathtaking. On another, not so cold day, we'll have to go back and enjoy it more.

But both my sisters are having babies and I felt left out. *laughs maniacally* NOT. The neighbor had a litter of mini Australian shepherds and offered us Missy. She's adorable and full of spunk and the only reason we agreed to it is so Zoey would have a companion and someone to wear her out. Eventually. Right now Zoey just wears Missy out. Zoey is unbelievably good to her and all puppy stage insanity aside, she really seems to complete our family.

The Floor Door Disaster

We finally agreed to replace the entire dining/living area with the same laminate wood floor Alex did in the entry/hall last year. He hates the noise of a hard floor but even more, I hate carpet and how if you actually live in your house with kids and pets, it's impossible to keep clean. So after much debate Alex agreed to it and started pulling up the floor at the back door. It wasn't good. There is no covering outside the back door and it was improperly installed. So after 10 years of wind and rain hitting the door, we had black mold and rot in the subfloor and all around the door frame. Very disheartening. And now we have an ugly brown tarp off the back of our house until the new door comes in. $400 later (not counting replacing the subfloor and the exterior finish work that will have to wait for warmer weather....) Grr.

Halloween!!

We celebrated Halloween over several days.

Today was a bit stressful because Alex had the floor torn up (a story for another post), last night was our first night with the new puppy (also a story for another post), I had a panic attack at church (someone threw-up during sacrament meeting) and Alex was mad at me for packing too many things into one weekend (you want to hear that rant? didn't think so) but we still had a nice afternoon/trick-or-treat with the Kaasas and Almonds. Trish invited us for homemade chili. Here's our kiddos all tricked out and full of treats. Amidst the chaos I didn't get a picture of our jack o' lanterns all lit up. Oh well. Saturday we went to the Kaasa's. We made our own pizzas for dinner.

We had a good laugh over Jeff's "Cougar Town" inspired jack o' lantern (the only time vomit is funny, mind you)
Trunk-or-treat, which wasn't actually trunk-or-treat but a condensed version of a carnival. We tried to talk the kids into staying home and trick-or-treating their parents, arguing that they'd get more candy that way. They weren't having it though so we headed to the church for some fun. When it was over Madison made us all laugh with her assessment of the event. She looked into her bucket and seeing there wasn't much candy there said, "Well, that was a waste." Haha!

Friday was the school carnival, which I had to self-talk myself through. The girls said they had SO much fun though. Jamie particularly loved being able to take her tickets and go off on her own without me having any say. Lindsey stayed with me while I manned the first hour of the cake walk *scream* then I took her around for all the festivities. There were games galore, prizes, face & nail painting, a dunk tank, bouncy houses (uh, which we did not do...) sugar sand art and a visit from Sonic. I'm glad the girls had a good time. You are proud to see me not robbing them of childhood joys. Because for me? It was a living hell. The crowd alone was enough to undo me. Add to it the smell of nachos and hot dogs and then someone puking in the bouncy house... No amount of Purell fixes that. Seriously. I will never understand how this setting appeals to anyone. And thanks for the heads up on the bouncy house Mom. Wednesday the girls went to a Halloween party with their cousins. I had to work but they said they had a great time. Thanks Kirsti!

Jamie did the ERHS dance team's clinic and loved it! They perform at half-time later this week. I had Meghan & Marissa on my watch and after dropping all four girls at Kaedyn's birthday party, I took Zoey to play at the river.We love the sun, huh Zoey girl?

I have to say, I really enjoyed being outside, alone with the dog. And I'm experiencing, for the first time, how a dog is man's best friend.

Salsa!

My mom canned salsa this summer and it was so yummy it inspired me to try. But in my (not very extensive) search for Yakima tomatoes I realized it was getting too late in the season. I figured I would just wait until next year, and then on our way home from the pumpkin patch we saw this truck. I asked Alex to get off the freeway and humor me for a look. And right there, on the last day of their produce stand (Schilter Farm) was the last of their Yakima tomatoes. Yay!Ready, set, canAll 12 pints sealed! Now let's hope the family likes it as much as I do. Alex said I should just stick with Old El Paso. Pshh! Thank you mom for inspiring (and helping) me!

P.S. If you're ever in Yelm you really must stop here for some beef jerky. It's unbelievably good.

Pumpkins

We went to Lattin's in Olympia for our pumpkins this yearThey have an apple festival here too! We bought one of each apple to try-Honey Crisp, Granny Smith, Fuji, Rome Beauty, Gala and Golden Delicious. We passed on the the cider and apple fritters. We fed the goats
And held baby animals

By the time we headed to the pumpkin patch it was really raining. We had our pumpkins picked within about a minute. It's a good time, even if it rains.

We had lunch at Brewery City Pizza. A yummy stop and a nice family date!

And yes. I'm omitting the bits of bad attitude, whining and daddy losing his temper with mommy-over what, I can't even remember.

Let There Be Heat

We have talked about replacing our gas insert with a pellet stove for a couple years now. We're kind of wimps about being cold and the resulting energy bill is sickening. So in a very selfless act, Alex sold his welder and we were able to use that money for the stove. (It was an expensive welder.) I would loved to have used the money for new carpet and paint or a hundred other things, but when it gets brutally cold and we still don't have to turn the furnace on, I will be very glad we did this. Well, that he did this. Alex researched the stoves, shopped the distributors, and saved us $400 installing it himself. One of the things I love most about Alex is his willingness and ability to figure things out and complete a project. This one was no small task given the wreck found behind the gas insert. Shame on home builders. Incomplete insulation, a poor heat barrier and multiple sites for a potential gas leak. He re-did this corner (the right way) and installed the stove last weekend, while I was out of town. He's amazing. Temporary tile and finish work still to be done but we have heat.

And plenty of fuel.

Dental Hygiene Reunion

Last weekend was the Clark College Dental Hygiene 40th Anniversary celebration. Eight of us from the class of '99I went with my dearest friend Summer, who I met in dental hygiene school. We took 6hrs of continuing education-perio and oral pathology (with speakers interesting enough to stay awake. Amazing!) We took a tour of the clinic where we learned about all the updates and money needed for more updates. (alumni=donations, right?) My heart started pounding as I walked through the clinic and down the halls to classrooms, the lab, radiology, sterilization... It was a little surreal remembering all the moments that defined my experience here. The memories are crystal clear and mostly painful. This was truly the hardest thing I've done. And while the program may have nearly killed me (literally, I was very sick the last quarter), it's great to have graduated from one of the nations best in dental hygiene. Sitting at "our desk." For old times sake.

I enjoyed reconnecting with classmates and even instructors! and a nice reception that evening. Very glad I went, despite the overwhelming flood of (not so wonderful) memories.

We decided, against our better judgment, to take some unused timeshare credits and the remainder of Alex's Edge card to spend the long weekend as a family in Whistler, BC. Sounded nice on paper but it was mostly cold and the girls were mostly bored and ungrateful. Let's face it. Road trips suck and the devil is in full force when you try to have "wholesome, recreational activities" with your family. Anyway...

I canned a box. After obsessing over "how to" websites and making half a dozen phone calls to my mom. It was nerve-wracking because it was my first attempt, I was short on time and consumed by fear of poisoning my family. Plus it's just my personality to be nerve-wracked. Geez.

Ride East

Alex & Jeff signed up to do the 2010 Northwest Ride of Dreams, a law enforcement torch run for Special Olympics. Melissa and I decided to tag along (in the Jetta) and together we all enjoyed a nice weekend east of the mountains.

Motorcycles left from Marysville, Seattle, Centralia, Kennewick and Spokane to meet in Ellensburg for the festivities. Here's Alex & Jeff with the Seattle group, although they didn't leave as a group, like we pictured. It's a long drive and Jeff looks bored. He's crazy.When we reached Cle Elum, we went our separate ways. The boys continued to Ellensburg and the girls (thanks to Spa Finder gift cards) stayed for an afternoon at the spa. It was lovely.We intended to join up with the boys for the torch run festivities but it turned out there wasn't really much going on. Again, not like we pictured but hey, they got their t-shirts. :) We headed to Yakima through the Yakima River Canyon. Breathtaking basalt cliffs above us, sparkling water below. It was beautiful. I'm going back there, for sure.

We had dinner (and a cheesy group pic) at Black Angus. And then we went back to the hotel pool where we (well, specifically Jeff and I) played like kids for almost two hours. Something about a weekend without kids makes me feel like I can act like one? Cannon balls, flips, splashing...complete abandonment of maturity.

We had a leisurely morning and picked up peaches from Krista (who I couldn't get enough of). A huge thank you for getting us a deal and inspiring me to try canning a box. We will definitely be coming back for another visit!

The drain project-a work in progress...One day this landscape will be beautiful again

Alex had to dig (by hand) under the retaining wall to take the drain to the street. He also hand shoveled all the drain rock. Here's to my amazing husband who does all the hard stuff!Our garden wasn't all for not. Though I'm not sure it was worth all the work for what little harvest we're getting. Curse the clouds.

At the Farmer's Market with Grandma. Lindsey's accessorizing with a crown is actually quite appropriate. Grandma makes us all feel like princesses!
